Symptom diagnostic

Is it your water?

A symptom-first diagnostic for common reported experiences in Summerville and the Lowcountry. Not a medical diagnosis. A data point worth testing.

Can water cause the symptoms I am noticing?

Some symptoms are strongly correlated with specific water-quality issues (scale on glassware, stiff laundry, rotten-egg smell), others are not. This page maps common reported experiences to likely water causes and the standard treatment. It is not medical advice. If a symptom affecting your body persists, talk to your doctor -- water is one data point, not the whole picture.

Not a medical diagnosis. The symptom mappings below describe commonly reported homeowner experiences and the water-quality factors most frequently associated with them. If a symptom affecting your body persists, talk to your doctor. A free in-home water test confirms what your specific tap is running; it does not replace medical evaluation.

The diagnostic

Symptom → likely cause → treatment.

Dry, tight-feeling skin after moving to Summerville or Charleston

Likely water cause

Hardness switch. Many homeowners moving from soft-water regions (NYC metro, parts of FL, coastal CA) go from 1-2 gpg to 5.5-7.2 gpg. Harder water leaves soap residue on skin that feels filmy.

Treatment

A whole-home water conditioner addresses hardness at every shower, sink, and washer in the house.

Note: If dryness is severe or accompanied by rash, bleeding, or other symptoms, see your doctor.

Hair feels crunchy, stiff, or takes more conditioner to manage

Likely water cause

Hardness. Calcium and magnesium in moderately hard water bond with soap and conditioner residues, leaving hair stiff after towel-drying.

Treatment

Same whole-home conditioner solution. Residents frequently report softer hair feel within the first week of installed soft water.

Hair falling out or thinning more than usual

Likely water cause

Hardness CAN contribute to mineral buildup on the scalp that affects hair quality, but hair loss has many medical causes. This symptom is NOT reliably diagnosed by water quality alone.

Treatment

A water test rules in or rules out hardness as a contributing factor. Do not treat this as a medical diagnosis -- see a dermatologist or your primary care doctor for hair loss concerns.

Note: Hair loss can indicate thyroid, hormonal, nutritional, autoimmune, or medication-related issues. Talk to your doctor.

White or cloudy scale on drinking glasses after the dishwasher

Likely water cause

Hardness. Mineral deposits dry onto glassware during the dishwasher's heated dry cycle. This is the most visually unambiguous hardness symptom.

Treatment

A whole-home conditioner or point-of-use water softener for the dishwasher supply line. Dishwasher rinse aid alone does not fully address the underlying cause.

Soap scum on shower doors and tile that wipes on but not off

Likely water cause

Hardness + soap. Calcium soap (metal-soap residue) is the chemistry; it bonds with glass and tile and builds up over weeks.

Treatment

Conditioner reduces scale. Existing scum requires citric-acid-based cleaner; prevents new buildup after install.

Water tastes or smells like rotten eggs

Likely water cause

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Common in private well water across Berkeley and Dorchester counties. Can also occur intermittently in water heaters on municipal supply when anaerobic bacteria react with the anode rod.

Treatment

For private well water: H2S-specific treatment (air injection oxidation, chlorination + carbon, catalytic carbon). For water-heater-only sulfur: aluminum-zinc anode rod replacement is the first step.

Chlorine taste or smell at the kitchen tap

Likely water cause

Free chlorine residual from Summerville CPW disinfection. Chloramine from CWS, MPW, or DCWA tastes more subtle -- less bleach-like but more persistent.

Treatment

Point-of-use reverse osmosis or a carbon filter at the kitchen tap. For chloramine specifically, catalytic carbon with longer contact time is required -- standard granular activated carbon is not sufficient.

Orange or rust-colored staining on bathtub, toilet, or laundry

Likely water cause

Iron in water. Very common in private well water across the SC Coastal Plain. Municipal water rarely shows this -- if you are on CPW, check for iron bacteria in the water heater or for galvanized plumbing corrosion.

Treatment

Well water: iron filter (oxidation + filtration) sized to the iron level detected. Municipal water: investigate plumbing before assuming whole-home treatment is required.

Blue-green stains on white fixtures

Likely water cause

Copper leaching from household plumbing, typically from low-pH water. Less common than iron staining.

Treatment

pH adjustment (calcite neutralizer for well water). Have a plumber check for isolated leak or corrosion point before assuming whole-home treatment.

Water heater making popping or rumbling noises

Likely water cause

Scale buildup at the bottom of the tank. Hard water accelerates this; the tank efficiency drops and life is shortened.

Treatment

Water heater flush (DIY or plumber) plus a whole-home conditioner to prevent recurrence. Check the anode rod at the same time.

Dishwasher and washing machine wearing out faster than expected

Likely water cause

Scale on heating elements and valve seats. Hard water shortens appliance life 20-30% for dishwashers and clothes washers, 30-50% for water heaters.

Treatment

A whole-home conditioner extends appliance life. The cost calculator estimates 10-year savings in the $3,000 to $8,000 range depending on your appliance mix.

Clothes feel stiff, colors fade faster than expected

Likely water cause

Hardness. Calcium and magnesium react with laundry detergent, leaving residue in fibers. Soap-based detergents are more affected than modern enzyme-based formulas, but both are affected.

Treatment

Whole-home conditioner addresses laundry at the same time as shower and kitchen. Detergent usage typically drops 30-50% once soft water is running.
